Part 1 Introduction 5 points
According to Wright, The Human Rights Revolution unfolded in three overlapping stages. Identify the stages and what happened during this time?
What is State Terrorism? How is it different from individual acts of terrorism?
The Cuban Revolution (CR) posed an unprecedented challenge to the status quo in Latin America and shook US foreign policy in the region. Explain how the CR shaped the US’s response to Chile or Argentina.
How many people more or less were tortured, disappeared and/or killed in Chile or Argentina during this time?
How is the US implicated in the massive human rights violations during this period?
What was the specific role of the US (military, foreign aid, logistics)?
What was the National Security doctrine and how did it unfold across the region after the CR?
Part 2 Case Study: 5 points
As a Case Study choose either Chile or Argentina and answer these questions (I suggest you chose one, not both.
State Terrorism (ST) according to Wright, unfolded in Chile and Argentina explain what happened in at least 1 of these countries.
If you chose Chile address these questions:
Who was Salvador Allende and what year did he come to power in Chile, what year was he overthrown and why is this crucially important?
What happened in the immediate aftermath of Allende’s overthrow (who came to power, how many people were detained, what was the rationale of the military government) ?
Explain the context of ST in Chile with details from the book.
How many people were tortured, disappeared or killed in Chile from 1973 to 1990.
If you chose Argentina answer these questions:
In what year did the Dirty War (DW) begin in Argentina?
Who was General Jorge Videla and explain his role in the DW?
What was Operation Condor?
Explain the context of ST in Argentina with details from the book.
How many people were tortured, disappeared or killed in Argentina during the Dirty War?
Part 3 (5 points)
Observations/Analysis, Conclusion
