Watch the supplemental video “Social Class in America” from 1957. Based upon the readings, what problems do you see with this rather quaint depiction of social mobility in America? Is Gilford Ames upper class? Would the three boys have likely gone to the same high school? Consider the women (mothers, girlfriends) who are tangential to the three main characters – what status did they hold and how was it obtained? How does economic achievement and occupational prestige contribute to class position?
