The year is 2040 and things have reached a tipping point. Fossil fuel reserves around the world are nearly gone, driving up the cost of gasoline to $20 per gallon. Millions of Americans can no longer afford to heat or cool their homes, and many businesses, schools, and other public buildings have been forced to close due to the rising costs of energy. The transportation of goods across the United States has ground to a halt, and many people are suffering extreme temperatures. On top of it all, greenhouse gas emissions have led to massive climate changes and damage to Earth’s environments. Can alternative energy help pull society back from the brink?

You are a scientist who has been tasked with finding a way to help solve the energy crisis. Your job is to research, design, and teach others about an alternative form of energy or another strategy that can meet the energy demands of the United States without further damaging the environment. You can choose from any of the following to research:
