Student Paper Outline

  1. Introduction –Describe the mindfulness-based topic for your literature review including information about the target population and problem(s) being addressed. Identify the need for a mindfulness-based program for the population(s) or problem(s) you are focused on.
  2. Present specific mindfulness-based programmatic examples for the population and problem you have identified Evidence based examples– Describe/present examples of evidence-based mindfulness programs have been applied in real life.

III.            Scientific merit for the mindfulness-based program

  1. Describe the causal pathways– For example if your topic is mindfulness for addiction, you might describe how mindfulness-based practices can increase awareness of triggers (like stress) that contribute to engaging in addictive behavioral habits (e.g., drinking) to relieve stress and avoid unpleasant feelings.
  2. Describe the theories of change– For example through the cultivation of mindful awareness of sensations, thoughts and factors that contribute to triggers for drinking, people may learn to interrupt the habit loop, reduce their stress response, and engage in a healthier behavior. Over time, repetition of new habits of mind (cognition) and behaviors can establish new neural pathways and strengthen areas of the brain that help reduce stress and regulate behavior and emotions.
  3. Quantitative and qualitative evidence– describe the quantitative (numerical data) evaluation method and outcome from the literature.  In addition, you may also include qualitative (descriptive information).
  4. Conclusions and recommendations –Provide at least two reasons to convince policymakers, decision makers of the benefits of using mindfulness-based approaches to address the topic you are studying.
  5. References– Cite current research from 2010- present day using APA citation format.
