Assignment 3—Understanding Gender Roles
Performance Objectives
- Research and formulate your own definition of gender identity and gender expression.
- Write a 5 -7 sentence paragraph, for each phrase, explaining the definition of that phrase. Include at least one cited reference for each definition to support your statements. Discuss each phrase in separate paragraphs.
- After thoroughly discussing the two definitions, address the gender socialization reflection questions below with detail in paragraph format.
- A separate reference page is required.
- Prepare a 3 -5 page document addressing the objectives 2 – 4.
Gender Socialization Reflection Questions (obj. 3):
- Have you ever considered how you developed your gender identity?
- How are your gender identity and expression still informed or affected by your experiences growing up?
- What messages do you send to others regarding what it means to be a “man” or a “woman”?
- How did (has) your schooling play into your understanding of what it meant (means) to be a man or a woman?
- Have you ever been ridiculed or denied an opportunity for doing or saying something that others didn’t consider “masculine” or “feminine” enough? How did that make you feel? How did you react? How did it affect your life beyond that single incident?
- Explain how gender identity and gender socialization affect counseling practices?
Purpose
It is important to understand how gender socialization affects the education and counseling of students. Educators and others must reflect upon how their gender identities were informed through childhood messages about what it meant to be a boy or a girl.
Assessment
You will produce a 3 – 5 page word document. Upload this file using the Assignments link in the Course Menu. Please do not physically type your paper into the assignment tool, but attach the file as a Word document. Please remember to include your last name on each page. You will be graded according to the rubric provided in the assignment tool.
