Gender Roles in The Family

A family constitutes people who live together and share many similarities, including blood ties but could also not be related by blood. The French culture puts a lot of importance on the family, with the vast majority of the population keeping tabs with the places they grew in by visiting or continuing to live there. This study wishes to discover the diverse roles played by every family member in the French society whose culture regulates how roles are played.

Thesis Statement

There are expectations placed on every individual in this society to deliver their duties and responsibilities. Each responsibility is dictated by the gender of the individuals in each family and society. However, as time evolves, these roles have kept evolving, with different genders stepping up to different roles. Women, whose stereotypical roles included child-rearing, cooking, and cleaning, take up more dual-career families by engaging in paid labor (Simonton, 2017). This study will focus on the changing roles of women in the family setting, with more women opting to pursue education and join the workforce.

Background Study and Problem Statement

Family is of utmost importance in the French culture since it forms the basis of society. The most fundamental unit of society in France is the nuclear family, where children spend most of their time before they move out after completing their education. Therefore, the family is a crucial tool in disseminating the cultural values advocated by the French culture. Traditionally, women were expected to carry out child-rearing, cooking, and cleaning duties. The father’s role was to provide for the family, protect them, and make the decision for the whole family. Women and children were supposed to submit to the father, the head of the family. Women were not allowed to engage in activities other than those stipulated by their culture.

Recently, times have changed, and more and more women have started venturing into labor markets. Similarly, women can pursue different carers, with nearly all women now participating in dual-career families and working to earn a living for their families. The French culture now allows women to do other things, despite the men being seen as the main breadwinners. However, the culture still expects women to fulfill their traditional roles despite adopting modern family settings. In rural settings, women’s roles are still under the strict division of labor, with women expected to uphold their feminine demeanor and physique (CULTURAL ATLAS, 2022). Similarly, women expect men to start relationships and take them on dates on the dating scene. There is freedom towards premarital sex with several children born to unmarried parents in the country. Some women prefer to raise their children alone.

Justification for Research

There are various studies on this subject, but still, a lot to be established on the gender roles in the family in French society. Therefore, more information is needed to address the gap in gender equality roles and justify women’s movements demanding the evolution of women’s rights. This research will help establish the difference in gender roles in French culture and provide more information on this field.

Methodology

I will collect preliminary information from peer-reviewed articles as well as journals. I will also conduct interviews and provide questionnaires to obtain valuable data for assessments and deriving conclusions.
